Brian Finch

Brian Finch is a senior manager and consultant with almost 40 years’ experience in aviation, including Air Traffic Control, Airport Management, Airport Policy and Planning, Passenger Terminal Building Management, Airport Baggage Handling Systems, Airport Passenger Handling and Airport Security.  His practical experience of understanding and managing large complex integrated airport’s activities is extensive.

From 1970 to 2000, Brian worked for BAA plc at Heathrow Airport, where he held a number of Senior Management positions, latterly as Head of the Connections Passengers and Baggage operations at Heathrow Airport.  During this time at BAA, Brian worked in a wide variety of roles in airport operational areas covering a 15 year period, including Airport Security Manager, where he was a key member of the team evaluating and delivering security screening options for hold baggage, passengers and carry-on baggage. During this project, Brian worked closely with both the UK and US Government departments responsible for aviation security. During his role as Airport Security Manager, Brian was also responsible for development and implimentastion of the baggage processes at Heathrow Airport associated with the introduction of the Heathrow Express through checked baggage operation.

Brian was also Head of Operations of Terminal 2 plus other hands-on man management functions.

The remaining 15 years was spent on airport policy and planning related activities.  Key roles here included work on the Heathrow Airport Master Plan, preparatory studies and participation on behalf of BAA for the Public Inquiries for the Heathrow Airport Terminal 4 Expansion, the Stansted Airport New terminal development and Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Project. During this period, Brian spent 6 years working on the design for Terminal 4, which included all passenger and baggage processing activities.

Brian has had considerable involvement in both UK Government and international aviation committees, has travelled to many overseas airports as part of this activity and his role at BAA.  He has also worked on secondment in Malaysia on the recent new airport at Kula Lumpur.

Since leaving BAA plc, Brian has undertaken a number of consultancy projects both in airports and in general management consultancy.  In particular, he spent considerable time working with British Airways on the Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Project and worked on a major new concept airport in South West UK for a large UK Local Government Authority. His involvement in the major UK airport concept included site and environmental analysis, preparation of major reports for member of the UK Parliament, the UK Department for Transport, briefs for UK Government Ministers, and a major report for the UK Prime Minister’s No 10 Downing Street Policy Unit.

Brian was also  involved with an international airline, helping them develop their strategy and planning in relation to operating at a new airport terminal building, being constructed in Kazakhstan.

Brian has also recently provided the aviation security input in a major study on behalf of the European Commission into improving integration of rail and air transport

Brian is also working with two venture capital projects in the United Kingdom who are both embarking on novel technology ventures, analysing ways to develop their business and looking at appropriate market opportunities.
