Michael McDonald

michael mcdonald sMIke is a specialist in business management, brand management, marketing and sales, corporate information and relations, start up projects. Mike’s career with BA included overseas management in the Middle East, the Caribbean and Northern Europe and also senior marketing and operational management in the run up to privatisation.

The roles performed by Mike as a country manager in a widely different portfolio of countries included sales and marketing, customer service and senior representation with national governments. He has extensive hands-on experience of managing all aspects of the commercial airline business.

In addition to his service abroad, Mike also worked on the introduction of Brand Management into the airline and was the Group Brand Manager for all short haul routes. Here he was responsible for the introduction of a new premium cabin product on the BA short-haul network that led to a sharp improvement in load factor and profitability of the BA shorthaul network.

In 1985 Mike was asked to be a seed manager in the corporate change programme Managing People First, which was run by Warner Burke of Columbia University New York. This involved talking and coaching groups of middle managers through a fundamental programme of change as BA moved towards becoming a private sector service business. Mike also worked on the Air Russia Project where he developed a strong relationship with the Russian Partners including Aeroflot. Here he was responsible for developing the commercial aspects of the project.

He left BA in 1996 and then spent 3 years working for the BBC creating the award winning visitor centre the BBC Experience. The centre was opened by the Queen in 1997 and cost £5.5 million.

In 2000 Mike was invited to work with both Houses of Parliament to introduce public access on guided tours during the Parliamentary recess. Mike completed this role after 4 years, by which time over 300,000 visitors had been recorded on this programme.
