Robert Young

Robert is a highly experienced and versatile airport expert, with a successful track record including many years in senior management positions at BAA plc.  Robert has also worked in the Republic of Kazakhstan, where he served as the President of International Airport Astana. Robert’s early career with at BAA was in Heathrow’s Retail Department.  He took a major role in design and implementation of ‘supermarket’ style of duty free shops at Heathrow, now in operation at airports throughout the world today.  His immediate success led to a range of managerial roles in both commercial and operational spheres including planning, cargo and property management.

Robert then took on the challenging role of Airport Duty Manager at Heathrow, with accountability for all operational aspects, during a period when security was extremely volatile. This was 24 hour shift post, entailing working alone and with sole responsibility for the airport. Successfully accomplishing this task, Robert was promoted to Terminal Operations Manager at Terminal 3, controlling operations with 500 staff working on a shift basis.  Key achievements included bringing on stream enhanced security equipment, new procedures to minimise disruption during security incidents, an improved roster system and downsizing the workforce.

Robert’s next responsibility was implementation of major infrastructure changes as Construction Development Manager for Terminal 3. He managed the implementation of a number of key projects including construction of the transfer lounge, new airline CIP lounge complexes and the South Wing extension to the terminal. He also managed the introduction of ‘Fast Track’ channels, ‘kerbside’ and other special check in arrangements, installation of a £58m system for 100% hold baggage screening.

Robert was appointed BAA Group IT Resource Management System  Development Manager,  in a team responsible for planning, designing and tendering for the installation a new £7m IT system. This system prepared hour by hour traffic forecasts and from this information was able to calculate detailed staff rosters. Besides addressing the technical issues, implementation of this complex project also embraced full consultation with staff at all levels.  The system has proved to be very accurate and is now in use at  most BAA airports.

In March 2005 Robert was invited to be President, International Airport Astana. Robert was the first foreigner to be appointed to such a senior position in a wholly Government owned company in Kazakhstan. He took control of the airport that had just undergone a major investment programme involving the re-construction of most of the airport’s facilities. During his contract period, Robert, restructured and downsized the company’s 1100 workforce and introduced international standards to all airport operations, security and IT systems. Robert also improved profitability, negotiated contracts and prepared the blueprint for commercial activities while establishing a customer service ethos. Two new international airlines were introduced, contributing towards over 30% annual traffic growth. He also oversaw completion of the development programme, started new capital works previously approved and established good relations with control authorities and other Governmental agencies, changing and influencing their policies on airport related issues.

Robert returned from Kazakhstan to the UK in January 2006 and has joined MSP Solutions, bringing his vast experience of airport management.
