Tony Westbrook

tony westbrook sFew professionals have had a wider experience of managing major projects than Tony Westbrook. Initially, he entered private practice as a quantity surveyor and after gaining professional qualifications he served as a commissioned officer in the RAF Airfield Construction Branch. Later, he was appointed an Associate of a London based professional practice to manage its Surrey-based branch. It was during that time his career in project management began, leading the design, building and commissioning of a new film studio.

Tony was appointed as Chief Quantity Surveyor for BAA and went on to pursue a varied career with the company. Further appointments included General Manager for the Gatwick North Terminal, Heathrow Terminal 4 and Stansted projects. At an operational level he has been a member of Heathrow’s Management Committee and was also a Director of Stansted Airport Limited.

Subsequently as BAA Engineering Director and Director of British Airports Services, he established and led a successful consultant airport planning and engineering group that gained high profile airport commissions both in the UK and overseas. During this period he was also the Project Director of the Macau International Airport Consortium responsible for the master planning and project management of the new international airport. Later, he established the consortium responsible for the design and commissioning of the terminal complex at the new Hong Kong International Airport.

Later he founded his own company providing consultancy services to a range of clients including a US group involved in major projects both in the UK and overseas. These included advising on programme management and procurement strategies for the Millennium Sports Stadium in Cardiff.

In 1996 Tony was appointed Chief Technical Officer by Athens International Airport (AIA) heading a multinational team overseeing the technical development and construction of the new Eleftherios Venizelos airport that opened in 2001 as part of the strategy for the 2004 Olympic Games. As a member AIA’s Executive he was responsible not only for the timely completion and quality of the new airport development but also established the consultative processes with both airlines, other users and the Hellenic CAA as well as implementing post-operational airport maintenance.

Throughout his career, in addition to his project management roles he has had detailed involvement with and interest in developing a range of procurement, contract implementation and maintenance strategies to ensure appropriate levels of project and cost control are maintained and managed effectively. Likewise he has had extensive dealings with major funding organisations.
